Scarsdale Middle School

Principal's Message

Dear SMS Community,

As I begin my third year as Principal of Scarsdale Middle School, I want to take a moment to welcome you and share my continued excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead this exceptional school. Having been part of the SMS community for over six years, first as an assistant principal and now as principal, I have come to deeply appreciate what makes this place so special. From the curiosity and creativity of our students, to the dedication of our staff, to the strong partnership we share with families, SMS is a place where meaningful learning and personal growth are at the heart of everything we do.

This year, we will continue our work in several important areas, including school climate, student wellness, equity and inclusion, grading and assessment, and greater alignment across the school. These efforts reflect long-term commitments shaped by the experiences of our community, and I am proud of the progress we’ve made together. I look forward to building on that momentum in the year ahead.

A key focus for us is our schoolwide theme: Raiders Lead. These two words reflect the values we want to see in our students every day—character, compassion, and effort. They are more than just ideas. They are the foundation of how we treat one another, how we engage with challenges, and how we grow. You will hear this phrase often at SMS, and I hope you find ways to use it at home too. Whether your child does something kind, perseveres through something hard, or simply makes a good choice, a quick “Raiders Lead” can go a long way in reinforcing who we are.

One of the things I value most about Scarsdale is its belief in continuous growth, reflection, and innovation. These values have long defined SMS, and I remain committed to honoring and building on that tradition.
When I first arrived at SMS, a colleague told me she smiles every morning when she walks into the building. Now, years later, I know exactly why. This is a joyful place, full of energy, heart, and purpose. It is a privilege to lead this community, and I look forward to another year of learning, growing, and leading together.

Warm regards,
Chris Coughlin
